CJ ENM, Epic link on virtual production

Fortnite has an estimated 350 million players around the world

South Korean broadcaster and producer CJ ENM has partnered with the Korean arm of Epic Games, the company behind hugely popular video game Fortnite, to develop virtual production facilities.

It comes as CJ ENM is set to open a real-time virtual production studio with an LED wall in Paju, Gyeonggi-do, later this year.

The arrangement will see CJ ENM using Epic gaming engine Unreal in potential future projects. The technology can produce photo-realistic 3D sets in real time, meaning actors can react to an environment they can see, rather than a green screen.

Cinematographers and VFX artists can also alter lighting and depth of field efficiently on set without the need to reshoot or make changes in post-production.

Sang Yeop Kim, head of CJ ENM’s Content R&D Center, said: “It is a true excitement to work with Epic Games, as the use of Unreal Engine will be a huge benefit to our on-set production. In a plethora of media, our effort to bring virtual production will push forward the creation of the next-generation content.”
