Cineflix targets US broadcast market

US production company Cineflix Studios is preparing to pitch its drama slate to the domestic broadcast networks for the first time this summer on the back of its move into scripted series.

Cineflix currently focuses on the US cable market, where it has a script with TNT. The Command is about an elite squad of detectives within the New York Police Department who are handed only the toughest cases to solve.

The production company will also be pitching a new drama, conceived as a UK-Canadian coproduction, to UK broadcasters in the next two months. Further details have not been revealed.

Copper, Cineflix’s first scripted series, has already been picked up by broadcasters including Shaw Media in Canada, and public broadcasters across Scandinavia. Distribution rights are split between Cineflix Rights and Beta Film.

The 10-episode first season is due to finish shooting in May and will debut on BBC America in August.

Christina Wayne, president of Cineflix Studios, told C21: “We have a show that probably will be led out of the UK. It could possibly be a Canadian-UK coproduction. We have a show at TNT. The script is written and we’re awaiting a pilot order.

“Our bread and butter is the cable business in the US, as well as in Canada, and this summer is the first time we’re looking to bring projects out to the broadcast networks in the US. We’re stepping into new territory but really focusing on our basic one-hour dramas in the cable business.”
