CIC to produce Frida Kahlo drama

US-based prodco CIC Media is working on a drama series based on the life and art of renowned Mexican artist Frida Kahlo in partnership with the Frida Kahlo Corporation and Venezuelan singer-songwriter Carlos Baute.

The show will be the first in a slate of projects celebrating Kahlo in different genres, and will begin production in the second quarter of 2021.

Creators Joel Novoa and Marilu Godinez will write the series, with Novoa (Blood & Treasure, Arrow) also directing. Baute will produce the show and compose the score.

CIC said a “prominent studio” had already shown interest in the drama, which it will present to the market in February.

Marlon Quintero, CIC Media’s MD and project leader, said: “We are currently developing and writing the basis of the series and expect to be ready to present the project in the upcoming weeks. Joel and Marilu are doing a superb job.”

Novoa and Godinez added: “The idea is to talk about what the books don’t: the subtext behind each painting, the richness of Mexico’s 20th century and the revolution – themes that are incredibly relevant at this unprecedented time.”
