Charles Moore to explore Margaret Thatcher, Ronald Reagan relationship in BBC series

Charles Moore, the author of the authorised biography of Margaret Thatcher, will front a new BBC Two docuseries about the relationship between the UK’s first female prime minister and US president Ronald Reagan.

Charles Moore

Thatcher & Reagan – The Special Relationship (working title) is a two-part doc produced by UK- and US-based indie Plimsoll Productions.

Though Thatcher and Reagan’s political and personal relationship was often tested, Moore will make the case that it fundamentally shifted the power dynamics of the 1980s, as together they helped reshape East/West relations, driving the Cold War towards a critical turning point after which came the fall of the Iron Curtain and the eventual collapse of the Soviet Union.

Formerly a journalist covering this story day by day, Moore has become a historian trying to understand it with hindsight.

The doc was commissioned by the BBC’s Patrick Holland, director of factual, arts and classical music, and Clare Sillery, head of commissioning for documentaries, history and religion.

For Plimsoll, the series producer is Chris Durlacher and the exec producers are Richard Klein and Denys Blakeway. The BBC commissioning editor is Simon Young.
