Writer confirms Channel 4 sitcom Derry Girls to end after third season

Sitcom Derry Girls

Series writer Lisa McGee has confirmed that her sitcom Derry Girls, set in the 90s in Northern Ireland, will end after its upcoming third season.

Breaking the news yesterday on Twitter, McGee’s statement said: “It was always the plan to say goodbye after three series. ‘Derry Girls’ is a coming-of-age story following five ridiculous teenagers as they slowly… very slowly… start to become adults, while around them the place they call home starts to change too and Northern Ireland enters a new, more hopeful phase — which was a small, magical window of time.”

The third and final season is currently going into production after two and a half years away from screens. Channel 4 ordered the season some time ago, but production was upset by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The series is produced by the UK’s Hat Trick Productions and airs locally on Channel 4, with seasons one and two bought by SVoD Netflix in their second window.
