Channel 4 returns to Ackley Bridge

Ackley Bridge has performed well among younger viewers

Channel 4 in the UK has renewed its school-set drama Ackley Bridge for a second season.

The drama, formerly known as The ABC, will return with 12 one-hour episodes to be produced by UK firm The Forge in association with Screen Yorkshire.

Ackley Bridge’s commission marked C4’s return to 20.00 drama and the show was one of the series the channel ordered to grow its reach among 10- to 14-year-olds, an audience the broadcaster has been criticised for neglecting.

C4 said Ackley Bridge was its highest-rating commission for 10- to 15-year-olds this year. All3Media International is The Forge’s international partner on the series and handles its international distribution.

The show is set in a fictional Yorkshire mill town populated by largely divided white and Asian inhabitants, and follows an academy formed by the merger of two formerly isolated comprehensive schools.
