Channel 4 reconstructs Rebekah Vardy v Coleen Rooney in docudrama

Coleen Rooney leaves The Royal Courts of Justice during the Vardy v Rooney trial

UK pubcaster Channel 4 has commissioned a docudrama that reconstructs the Rebekah Vardy v Coleen Rooney court case.

Vardy v Rooney: A Courtroom Drama will be produced by Chalkboard and comprises two episodes recreating the high court defamation case, using real court transcripts verbatim.

Scenes from the at times farcical courtroom trial will be juxtaposed with analysis from the media and on social media. Actors will play the parts of the main protagonists including Rebekah Vardy and Coleen Rooney, and their respective footballer partners Jamie Vardy and Wayne Rooney.

Vardy sued Coleen Rooney for defamation after Rooney accused her of leaking details of the Rooneys’ private lives to The Sun newspaper. Rooney posted fake Instagram updates and restricted which of her followers could see the posts until she narrowed the culprit down to Vardy, leading to her being dubbed Wagatha Christie.

Chalkboard’s creative director Tom Popay is exec producing the drama-documentary, which is written by Chris Atkins and directed by Oonagh Kearney.

Alf Lawrie, head of factual entertainment at Channel 4, said: “More outlandish than a storyline from Footballers Wives, this high court case gripped the nation.
