UK pubcaster Channel 4’s Indie Growth Fund has invested in Glasgow-based independent production company Freedom Scripted.

Mike Ellen

Founded in 2018 by former BBC, STV Group and Eleventh Hour Films exec Mike Ellen, Freedom Scripted focuses on high-end contemporary drama.

The indie has a range of projects currently in development, including an adaptation of Sarah Moss’s novel Summerwater by John Donnelly; Glasgow-set crime thriller Southside from up-and-coming writer Raisah Ahmed and Berlin-based HaRiBos; and Unseen, a fresh take on invisibility from Welsh writer Alan Harris.

Caroline Murphy, head of Channel 4’s Indie Growth Fund, said: “Mike has a proven track record having been involved in some of the biggest TV drama during his career spanning more than 20 years. Freedom Scripted is at a really exciting moment in its journey. Our investment will provide the opportunity to make some key hires and take this business to the next level.”

Ellen, CEO and creative director at Freedom Scripted, added: “Having built a strong slate of dramas with writers we love and with much more to come, I’m confident this investment will enable us to go to the next level and produce entertaining and talked-about shows we can be proud of from all of the UK.”

Founded in 2014, the Indie Growth Fund provides additional support to the UK independent creative sector by taking minority stakes in small and mid-sized production outfits to help them to grow their businesses.

The list of C4-backed indies now numbers 18 and, as well as Freedom Scripted, includes Big Deal Films, Candour Productions, Duck Soup Films, Eagle Eye Drama, Firecrest Films, Five Mile Films, Paper Entertainment, Parable, Proper Content, Rockerdale Studios, Salamanda Media, Spelthorne Community TV, Spirit Studios, Two Rivers Media, Uplands Television, Voltage TV and Yeti Media.
