CCTV reaches for Rising Star

A Chinese broadcaster has ordered two seasons of Keshet International’s well-travelled interactive talent show Rising Star.

State broadcaster CCTV-3 will air a total of 30 episodes of the competition format, to be produced by Enlight Media China.

The show allows viewers to vote on the efforts of singers in real time as they perform behind a screen, giving them immediate feedback. If the performer secures 70% of the viewers and judges’ votes, the screen rises and the performer is revealed.

Keshet International, the production and distribution arm of Israel’s Keshet Media Group, says the agreement with CCTV will see Rising Star air to a potential audience of up to 1.2 billion viewers.

Wen Ha, programme director at CCTV-3, said the series’ cross-platform and interactive features have never been seen on Chinese TV before.

The series was originally produced by Tedy Productions for Keshet Broadcasting’s Channel 2 and premiered on the network last September.

To date, the series has aired internationally in Brazil (RedeGlobo), Portugal (TVI) and the US (ABC), while it is currently on air in Germany on RTL and in Indonesian on RCTI. A Russian version is set to launch this weekend.

The format is still set to air in over 20 more territories, including ITV in the UK and Toro in Italy.
