The new CBS Studios series, set in the modern day and starring Morris Chestnut (Nurse Jackie, The Resident), will premiere during the 2024/25 US broadcast season.

The story is set one year after the death of Holmes at the hands of Moriarty, with Watson resuming his medical career as the head of a clinic dedicated to treating rare disorders. However, Watson quickly finds that he can’t leave his old life behind.

Craig Sweeny (Elementary, Star Trek: Section 31) penned the pilot and will serve as showrunner and executive producer.

CBS described the project as a “medical show with a strong investigative spine, featuring a modern version of one of history’s greatest detectives as he turns his attention from solving crimes to solving medical mysteries.”

Additional executive producers on the show include Chestnut, Canadian-American physician, scientist and author Shäron Moalem, and Aaron Kaplan and Brian Morewitz for Kapital Entertainment. Larry Teng will also exec produce and direct the first episode.

CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach said: “We are thrilled to feature such a beloved character from the world of Sherlock Holmes at the centre of this series and have it brought to life by Morris Chestnut in a fresh and unexpected take on the immortal doctor.

“Craig Sweeny’s bold new vision for the complex Dr Watson deftly interweaves rich character storytelling with edge-of-your-seat medical mysteries.”
