CBeebies has commissioned Moon & Me (50×22′), which is the first production from Davenport’s prodco Foundling Bird and Bento Box Entertainment’s joint venture Sutikki.

The companies partnered last year to launch the unit, appointing Irene Weibel and Andrew Kerr, two former Nelvana execs, to lead the company.

The series was commissioned by Kay Benbow, controller of CBeebies, and will begin airing on the BBC’s preschool channel in early 2018.

It has been created, written and produced by Davenport, who also co-created hit preschool franchise Teletubbies and wrote all 365 original episodes before leaving his role as creative director at Anne Wood’s Ragdoll Productions in 2010.

Inspired by tales of toys that come to life when nobody is looking, Moon & Me is described as a comical story of a special friendship between two characters from completely different worlds.

The show will combine the latest production methods with traditional storytelling, comedy and music to create a picturebook world, according to the producers.

Sutikki is serving as the primary production, merchandising and non-UK distribution partner for the series. Pre-production has begun at multiple locations in the US and in the UK.

“The time is right for a new approach to preschool storytelling and – like In the Night Garden and Teletubbies, 10 and 20 years ago respectively – Moon & Me will pioneer new production techniques to create the highest standard of quality programming for the CBeebies audience,” said Davenport.

“Moon & Me is a delightful new series with charming stories and innovative production techniques that will really resonate with our viewers and support their creative development,” said Benbow.
