Harold Ballard: Power Player is being directed by actor and director Jason Priestley (Beverly Hills 90210, Private Eyes), with Modern Family writer Chuck Tatham and Lone Eagle president Michael Geddes exec producing.

Ballard was majority owner of the Maple Leafs from February 1972 until his death in 1990. The documentary will tell the story of his money-first attitude towards running his teams, as well as his stint in prison for fraud. It will debut on the CBC next year.

Geddes said: “The documentary of Harold Ballard is one that is long overdue and looks back at a time when the world of business and hockey intersected in a storm of controversy and astonishment.

“Because it’s been many years since Harold Ballard’s name dominated the headlines, we will take viewers on a fantastic trip back to an era that was full of crazy and bombastic moments during Harold Ballard’s ownership of the beloved Leafs.”

Priestley added: “Telling the story of Harold Ballard and his chaotic, mercurial ownership of the Toronto Maple Leafs is really exciting. He was a truly larger-than-life Canadian, and the examination of what made him behave the way he did is going to be fascinating.”
