CONTENT STRATEGIES: Uncovering programming opportunities worldwide

Cartoonito pumps up Ballooniverse

Turner Broadcasting System has commissioned a live-action show featuring a balloon artist for its UK kidsnet Cartoonito.

Ballooniverse (26×11’) will star magician David Crofts (aka Mr Balloonie) and assistant Zoe Spurden, who teach groups of children different subjects through balloon art and help develop their craft skills. UK indie 2 Sides TV will produce.

“As well as its creative ingenuity, Ballooniverse ticks two important boxes for Cartoonito in the UK, as a show that is both home-grown and live-action,” said Turner Broadcasting UK director of programming Gary Finnegan.

Preschool net Cartoonito launched in the UK in 2006 as a programming block on Cartoon Network Too and became a full channel 12 months later. Last year, it expanded across EMEA and now broadcasts to 125 million homes in 112 territories as a programming block on Turner net Boomerang.

Finnegan added local commissioning duties to his previous scheduling-only role last year as part of the strategy, which chief content officer Michael Carrington oversees.
