Carell’s Space Force lifts off at Netflix

Streaming giant Netflix is set to lampoon US president Donald Trump’s administration after ordering a comedy from The Office’s Steve Carell and Greg Daniels, based on the new space force division of the US military.

Space Force is a workplace comedy centred around the people tasked with creating the sixth branch of the US armed services.

Co-creator Carell (The 40-Year-Old Virgin) will star and exec produce the series, with fellow co-creator Daniels (Parks and Recreation) serving as showrunner and exec producer. US prodco 3 Arts Entertainment’s Howard Klein will also exec produce.

The show was announced via a Star Wars-esque spoof video message with a backdrop of composer Richard Strauss’ “Also sprach Zarathustra”, the theme from Stanley Kubrick’s iconic sci-fi film 2001: A Space Odyssey.

“On June 18, 2018, the federal government announced the creation of a sixth major division of the US armed force. The goal of the new branch is to defend satellites from attack and perform other space-related tasks…Or something. This is the story of the men and women who have to figure it out,” it read.

The commission follows news earlier this week that the streamer was hiking its monthly subscription fee in the US from US$10.99 to US$12.99.
