American public broadcaster PBS has picked up the US rights to indigenous Canadian drama Little Bird.

The six-part series, created by Jennifer Podemski and Hannah Moscovitch and sold internationally by Fremantle, will make its US debut on all PBS platforms on October 12. In Canada, it debuted on Bell Media-owned streamer Crave and indigenous broadcaster APTN in May.

Produced by Montreal-based Rezolution Pictures and OP Little Bird, the hour-long show follows a First Nations woman (played by Darla Contois) as she embarks on a path to find her birth family and uncover the hidden truth of her family history.

The drama series is set against the historical backdrop of The Sixties Scoop, a period of time when an estimated 20,000 indigenous children were taken from their families and communities and adopted by white families.

The series is executive produced by Christina Fon, Ernest Webb, Catherine Bainbridge, Linda Ludwick, Kim Todd, Nicholas Hirst, Podemski, Moscovitch, Zoe Hopkins, Elle-Máijá Tailfeathers and Jeremy Podeswa, along with Fremantle’s Christian Vesper and Dante Di Loreto.

PBS also acquired the 90-minute companion documentary, Coming Home, which provides historical context for the drama series. The doc is directed by Erica Daniels (Run as One).
