Canada’s Atomic Cartoons to adapt Sony animated feature Surf’s Up into series

The Surf’s Up series will see the return of characters from the original movie

Vancouver-based Atomic Cartoons is developing an animated series based on Sony Pictures Animation’s 2007 movie Surf’s Up.

The Thunderbird-owned animation studio said it is “developing and intends to produce” Surf’s Up: The Series, which will see the return of characters including Cody Maverick, Big Z and Chicken Joe.

The series adaptation is being written by Lienne Sawatsky, Dan Williams and John Hazlett, the trio behind YouTube animated series The Guava Juice Show.

Aimed at kids aged six to nine, and with episodes of around 11 minutes, the series follows an over-confident teen penguin named Flip who teams up with a group of zany young surfers on his quest to become a surf legend.

Sawatsky, Williams and Hazlett will serve as co-showrunners. Executive producers on the project include Thunderbird CEO and chair Jennifer Twiner McCarron, Atomic Cartoons president Joel Bradley and Atomic Cartoons senior VP of originals Aaron Behl.

Atomic’s exec director of development Kitty Walsh is co-executive producer, while Rick Mischel is executive producer for Sony.
