C4 commits to true crime

Surviving Jeffrey Epstein

UK public broadcaster Channel 4 is launching a new platform focused on true crime programming for its streaming service All4.

True Crime on 4 will launch this autumn and feature a line-up of programming including Surviving Jeffrey Epstein and Murder in the Alps, a three-parter about the murders of the Al-Hilli family and Sylvain Mollier in 2012.

Set to feature more than 150 hours of programming, it will sit alongside other channel brands on All4 such as Walter Presents, the service specialising in foreign-language drama.

The Guardian reports new shows heading to True Crime on 4 include Bling Ring, about crimes committed against celebrities, and I, Sniper: The Washington Killers, about the killing spree of John Allen Muhammad and Lee Boyd Malvo. Acquisitions include Vice documentaries The Devil You Know and Dark Side of the Ring.

It comes as the popularity of the genre shows no sign of waning, with broadcasters and platforms around the world seeking true-crime content.

Netflix in particular has doubled down on true crime following the success it has had with shows such as Tiger King and Don’t F**k with Cats, which has led to a production boom in the genre.
