UK public broadcaster ITV today launches its new combined ad-supported and subscription video-on-demand service ITVX, featuring over 10,000 hours of programming, including more than 250 movies and 200 TV shows.

Leading the line-up is Cold War thriller A Spy Among Friends, starring and exec produced by Golden Globe- and Emmy-winning actor Damian Lewis, alongside Guy Pearce and Anna Maxwell Martin.

Based on the New York Times best-selling non-fiction book by Ben Macintyre, the six-part drama is produced by ITV Studios and distributed by Sony Pictures Television.

Lewis, Maxwell Martin and Macintyre spoke to Stephen Armstrong about the show at C21’s Content London last week, together with exec producer Alexander Cary and Sony exec VP of drama development Lauren Smith.

Meanwhile, ITV sitcom Plebs comes to an end after five seasons with a feature-length special that premieres on ITVX today.

Filmed in Bulgaria and Wales, Plebs: Soldiers of Rome is produced by Rise Films and follows a band of young citizens of the ancient city after they are accidentally enrolled to join the ranks of the Roman army.

The show is written and directed by Sam Leifer and Tom Basden, who stars alongside Tom Rosenthal, Ryan Sampson and Jon Pointing.

Leifer and his brother Teddy, who is CEO of Newen Studios-owned Rise, spoke to Nico Franks about Plebs’ final outing, the fledgling ITVX and the work their company is also doing in the documentary space, including Judd Apatow-directed George Carlin’s American Dream for HBO and HBO Max and Once Upon a Time in Londongrad, a political thriller for Sky Documentaries and NBCUniversal.
