US studio MGM has promoted Mark Burnett to chairman of its Worldwide Television Group, with global responsibility for creating and producing TV content.

Burnett, who became president of MGM’s TV and digital group in 2015, has also had his contract at the company extended through 2022.

MGM Television recently expanded the scope of its unscripted content development and production with the acquisitions of Evolution Media and Big Fish Entertainment.

The company says it is producing almost 800 hours of TV this year, and has projects with talent such as Bear Grylls in the works.

“Mark is a one-of-a-kind creative individual with an incredible eye for talent and content and a long track record of success,” said Kevin Ulrich, CEO at Anchorage Capital Group and MGM’s chairman of the board of directors.

“After more than 25 years in the business, he remains at the top of his game. We are confident that under Mark’s leadership, MGM Television’s best days are ahead.”

Burnett added: “In the past four years at MGM, we have renewed all our television franchises and have added a lot of new hits. This is the most fun I have had in my career and I know we will continue to build on these successes.”

Burnett’s production company One Three Media was acquired by MGM Studios in two transactions in 2014 and 2015. The exec started his career in 1992 with adventure show Eco-Challenge and has also been behind hit formats including Survivor.

MGM’s scripted content includes The Handmaid’s Tale for Hulu and Fargo for FX, as well as Vikings, Get Shorty and Condor.
