Bunim/Murray takes First Years

Banijay-owned US production outfit Bunim/Murray has optioned the local rights to a scripted reality series about the first year at secondary/high school from France’s Newen Distribution.

The First Years was created and produced by Newen-owned Dutch prodco Tuvalu Media and first aired on NPO ZAPP in the Netherlands in 2014. A seventh season of 80 episodes is being shot this summer.

The tween series is targeted at young school children with recognisable stories about the challenges and problems of the first year of secondary school.

It is shopped internationally by Newen Distribution, the sales arm of TF1-owned French production giant Newen, and has previously been adapted for DR in Denmark, SVT in Sweden and the BBC’s iPlayer VoD service in the UK.

Bunim/Murray, the US prodco behind groundbreaking US reality format The Real World, will now start pitching the format to broadcasters.

Newen acquired a majority stake in Tuvalu Media in February last year.
