Bron invests in Small Axe producer

Mangrove, one of the five films that make up Small Axe

US film and TV producer Bron Studios is investing in Turbine Studios, the UK-based prodco behind Steve McQueen’s BBC and Amazon anthology series Small Axe.

Turbine is headed by industry veterans Andrew Eaton (The Crown), Tracey Scoffield (Small Axe), David Tanner (Small Axe) and Justin Thomson (The Fall).

The company will now work with Bron to develop, package and produce original IP from the UK and elsewhere in Europe. Turbine will also be a strategic partner to Bron, supporting some of the company’s film and television productions across the continent.

Bron said its investment would give it greater influence in the UK market for local commissions.

Eaton’s credits include series producer on Netflix royalty drama The Crown and producer on Rush, the 2013 film about racing drivers James Hunt and Niki Lauda.

He recently teamed up with DMC Films, run by actor Michael Fassbender (X-Men) and producer Conor McCaughan, to option the film rights to Night Boat to Tangier, the latest novel from Kevin Barry, who is adapting his own work for the screen. Fassbender will star.

Eaton is also producing Netflix’s Munich, a feature adaptation of the Robert Harris bestseller.

Scoffield’s exec producer credits include Winston Churchill TV film The Gathering Storm, Stephen Frears’ Dirty Pretty Things and Michael Winterbottom’s A Cock & Bull Story. She also produced the Emmy-winning Mohammad Ali’s Greatest Fight and ITV series The Frankenstein Chronicles.

Small Axe, an anthology series of five films focusing on the West Indian community in London, is currently airing on BBC1 in the UK and is available on Amazon Prime in the US.

Bron has a slate of US domestic and international TV projects going into production, including the English-language remake of popular French series Call My Agent from John Morton and spaghetti western-style series That Dirty Black Bag, from Mauro Aragoni and Brian O’Malley.
