Broadcasters in Japan, Switzerland, CEE enter Dark Woods with Global Screen

Dark Woods is based on the real-life disappearance of a woman in Germany in 1989

MIPCOM: German miniseries Dark Woods, from Emmy-winning writer Stefan Kolditz (Generation War), has been acquired in territories including Japan and across Central and Eastern Europe, distributor Global Screen has confirmed.

The 6×45’ drama has been bagged by NHK Enterprises in Japan, Canal+ in Poland, Ceska Televize in Czech Republic, RTV Slovenija in Slovenia, Latvian Television, LRT in Lithuania and Mauris Film for CIS markets.

Indian cinema and events company BookMyShow has taken the South Asian rights, while RTS has French-speaking Switzerland. Deals in North America (with streamer Topic Media), France (Canal+) and Spain (Cosmo TV) were  announced previously.

Global Screen, part of German media conglom Telepool, said licence deals for Dark Woods in the UK, Australia, Scandinavia and Portugal are expected to close during Mipcom, the annual TV industry conference which takes place in Cannes this week.

The show, based on the real-life disappearance of a woman in Lower Saxony in 1989, is produced by ConradFilm and Bavaria Fiction on behalf of NDR and ARD Degeto for German public broadcaster Das Erste.

Global Screen will be shopping the show to other buyers in Cannes this week, alongside thriller series The New Front, family entertainment series 3Hz and Constantin Television’s tentpole productions The Palace and The Conference.

Announcing the Dark Woods sales, Julia Weber, head of acquisitions and sales at Global Screen, said: “The outstanding ratings in Germany – it was the most-watched programme in ARD’s catch-up TV in 2020 – along with rave reviews tipped the scales in more than one negotiation.”
