Toronto-based producer and distributor Breakthrough Entertainment has bought the worldwide distribution rights to a documentary about notorious criminal Charles Manson, who died last month.

Pyramid Productions’ Charles Manson: The Final Words tells the story of the Manson Family murders from Manson’s perspective, using new interviews as well as case files.

Director and producer James Buddy Day conducted the interviews with Manson, which were the last recorded before the former cult leader’s death on November 19. The documentary is narrated by musician Rob Zombie, and claims to unveil the true story of the murder spree and motives of the killers.

Manson led the Manson Family cult, which carried out a series of murders in the late 1960s. He was sentenced to life in prison in 1972 and died in jail in California aged 83 last month.

Charles Manson: The Final Words premiered on US cablenet Reelz Channel on December 3. Breakthrough will release the film on iTunes, along with a theatrical release in Canada, in the New Year, after which it will go to pay TV and SVoD buyers.

Breakthrough is looking to maximise the doc’s broadcast potential outside of Canada and is currently in negotiations with a number of channels.

Craig McGillivray, VP of distribution at Breakthrough, said: “We are continuously focused on sourcing captivating new premium content that pushes the envelope and generates mass attention.”
