Boomerang OTT shows go int’l

The new Wacky Races will feature returning and fresh characters alike

Turner-owned kids’ network Boomerang will begin launching series produced for its forthcoming US OTT service on its international channel later this year.

Dorothy & the Wizard of Oz and Wacky Races, two series commissioned for Boomerang’s recently announced SVoD service, will air on Boomerang’s linear channel outside of the US from June.

The shows follow the deal Turner and Warner Bros. Animation (WBA) agreed in 2015 for the latter to supply almost 450 half-hours of original programming, primarily from its huge library of classic titles, to Boomerang.

Dorothy & the Wizard of Oz is described as an uplifting comedic fantasy series and is based on the classic L. Frank Baum book series, set soon after Dorothy and her friends have defeated the Wicked Witch of the West.

Wacky Races, meanwhile, is a reboot of the Hanna-Barbera classic that C21 revealed was in development in 2015. It will see the return of characters such as Penelope Pitstop, Peter Perfect, Dick Dastardly and Muttley alongside a roster of new racers.

“The introduction of these iconic shows and stories is very well timed, as we continue to build Boomerang as our second flagship to Cartoon Network and a strong kids and family brand across international markets,” said Patricia Hidalgo, chief content officer of EMEA kids & international kids strategy at Turner.

Other WBA series airing on Boomerang internationally include The Tom & Jerry Show, Be Cool Scooby-Doo!, Bunnicula and Looney Tunes, alongside original production The Happos Family and acquisitions such as Grizzy & the Lemmings and Mr Bean: The Animated Series.
