BKN brings Zorro up to date

International animation firm BKN has signed a deal with Zorro Productions for the production and distribution of a CGI-animated series and film based on the classic property Zorro.

BKN is to immediately begin production for the first series and direct-to-DVD film with the working title Zorro – Generation Z. BKN says that the toon will see a departure from the classic Zorro, which was set in the early 1800s. The new series will set Zorro in the present day with modern-themed adventures.

BKN will handle all TV and distribution as well as merchandising and licensing for all elements in the project worldwide.

The company said it is planning to produce a minimum of 26 episodes for initial broadcast plus a direct-to-DVD film, but if the market response continues to be positive this commitment may be increased to a combined 39 episodes.

BKN, which is listed on the Deutsche Bourse in Frankfurt and AIM in London, has a library that includes Legend of the Dragon, Kong and Dork Hunters From Outer Space.

John Gertz, Zorro Productions’ president, said: “We have chosen BKN for its proven ability and experience in producing high-quality animation and for its extensive distribution network globally. Zorro is a classic character that deserves that type of commitment and we believe that this new version, which will reach kids in an exciting way, will be very successful.”
