Berlanti Productions, WBTV drama Girls on the Bus heads to HBO Max

WarnerMedia-owned streamer HBO Max has given a straight-to-series order to The Girls on the Bus, a comedic drama from Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros Television.

Julie Plec

The project, which is inspired by a chapter of Amy Chozick’s best-selling book Chasing Hilary: Ten Years, Two Presidential Campaigns and One Intact Glass Ceiling, has moved around on several occasions in recent years. Initially, the series was set up with Netflix, before moving to The CW and now to HBO Max.

Written and executive produced by Julie Plec via her My So-Called Company and Chozick, the drama chronicles four female journalists who follow every move of a parade of flawed presidential candidates, while finding friendship, love and scandal along the way.

Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and David Madden are executive producing through Berlanti Productions, which has an overall deal with Warner Bros Television.

Plec, co-creator of The CW drama The Vampire Diaries, was previously under an overall deal with Warner Bros Television until 2020, when she moved to Universal Television. As The Girls on the Bus was set up prior to her signing with Universal Television, there is no conflict.

Other recently announced projects involving Plec include supernatural drama Dead Day and paranormal drama Vampire Academy, both for NBCUniversal-owned US streamer Peacock.
