BBC, Theroux line up Joe Exotic doc

Louis Theroux will meet Joe Exotic in prison for his new doc

UK pubcaster BBC2 has ordered a feature-length documentary from filmmaker Louis Theroux about Joe Exotic, the subject of Netflix doc Tiger King.

Louis Theroux: The Cult of Joe Exotic (working title, 1×90’) will see Theroux visit Exotic in the Oklahoma prison where he is serving a 22-year sentence for animal cruelty and attempted murder. The two first met 10 years ago when Theroux was making a documentary about the most dangerous pets in the US.

The feature doc is being produced by Theroux’s company Mindhouse Productions. It will be directed by Jack Rampling and exec produced by Arron Fellows. BBC Studios, the commercial arm of the BBC, will handle global distribution.

Theroux most recently featured on TV last September in the fifth season of Louis Theroux – Life On The Edge.

Exotic has already been the subject of docs by US network NBC and newly launched SVoD Discovery+.
