BBC reveals famous lives through photos

BBC2 and BBC Studios (BBCS) are working on a biographical documentary series that re-examines the lives of six famous people through the photographs that have come to define them.

In Ten Pictures (working title, 6×60′) will be produced by the BBCS documentary unit and will look at the lives of as-yet-unannounced figures ranging from film stars and musicians to sporting heroes and cultural figures.

Each episode is dedicated to a single celebrated figure and examines their lives using 10 key images, from their earliest photo to one of their last, exploring milestones, moments of conflict and turning points such as their breakthrough moment or their fall from grace.

The photographs featured will be selected from every stage of their lives, and along the way the films will explore contemporary themes about identity, sexuality, race, gender and more.

Abigail Priddle, commissioning editor at BBC Factual, said: “We’ve all heard the saying ‘every picture tells a story’ and these images – famous, shocking, forgotten or unseen – each helps reveal the fascinating life and times of these remarkable characters.”

The show was commissioned by Patrick Holland, controller of BBC2, and Clare Sillery, head of documentaries, history and religion. The executive producer is Julia Harrington and it will be distributed internationally by BBCS Global Distribution.
