Tinopolis Group-owned Mentorn Scotland has been commissioned in association with SJP Media to produce a 6×60′ version of the show, which last broadcast on BBC2 in 2001.

The format features armed, remote controlled robots that battle against each other in a series of contests. Mentorn said the new version would feature more robots and take place in a purpose-built arena in Glasgow.

The new show has been commissioned by BBC2 controller Kim Shillinglaw, acting controller of entertainment Alan Tyler, and Jo Street, BBC commissioning editor.

Tinopolis-owned Passion Distribution will handle international sales of the finished series and format.

Shillinglaw said Robot Wars “is an absolute TV classic and I’m thrilled to be updating it for the next generation of viewers. With new technological advances making for an even more exciting and immersive experience, this is a fantastic example of the kind of content-rich factual entertainment that BBC Two excels at.”

Robot Wars, which sold around the world, moved to Channel 5 in the UK after ending on BBC2 although the pubcaster’s sibling kids network CBBC recently ordered a mechanised competition show from Canuck prodco DHX.

Meanwhile ABC in the US recently extended its own robot show BattleBots for a second season, following a 13-year hiatus on US screens.
