BBC picks up Spanish-language Señorita 89, German drama KaDeWe from Fremantle

KaDeWe – Our Time is Now first aired on ARD Degeto

UK pubcaster the BBC has acquired Spanish-language drama Señorita 89 and German scripted series KaDeWe – Our Time is Now for its autumn schedules.

Señorita 89 (8×60’) is a thriller from Fremantle and Oscar-winning producers Pablo and Juan de Dios Larraín (A Fantastic Woman, La Jauría). It goes behind the curtain of Latin America’s beauty pageant culture in the 1980s.

As well as Pablo and Juan de Dios Larraín, the series is executive produced by Angela Poblete and Mariane Hartad from producer Fabula and Christian Vesper from Fremantle. Written and directed by Lucia Puenzo, it launched on streamer Pantaya in the US and Puerto Rico and on StarzPlay in Spain and Latin America.

KaDeWe – Our Time is Now (6×60’), meanwhile, was created by Julia von Heinz. The action revolves around Berlin’s Kaufhaus des Westens (‘department store of the West’), which has been a landmark destination for high-end shoppers for over 100 years.

Produced by Constantin Television (We Children from Bahnhof Zoo) and UFA Fiction (Deutschland 83/86/89), the drama follows four progressive and ambitious young friends as they search for self-fulfilment in the 1920s.

KaDeWe – Our Time is Now is produced by Sarah Kirkegaard and Alicia Remirez and exec produced by Oliver Berben and Benjamin Benedict. It originally aired on ARD Degeto in Germany.

The deal with the distribution arm of Fremantle will see both shows launch in the UK in late 2022.
