BBC axes My Family

Long-running BBC1 sitcom My Family has been cancelled after 11 years on-air, BBC1 controller Danny Cohen confirmed today.

“The 11th series, coming to BBC1 later this year, will be the last,” he said. “Now that all the Harper children have fled the nest we feel it’s time to make room for new comedies on BBC1.”

The show is produced by DLT Entertainment and was created by an American showrunner, Fred Barron, in an attempt to import US production methods and team-writing methods to Britain. Robert Lindsay and Zoe Wanamker star.

Today’s move comes soon after DLT CEO Donald Taffner Jr told C21 that the company had sustained double-digit percentage reductions in production budget allocations from the BBC for the popular sitcom over the past few seasons, since the 2008 recession hit.

The first episode of My Family went out on BBC1 in September 2000.
