BBC America walks down Ripper Street

BBC America has come onboard as coproducer of the new eight-part drama series set in the wake of the notorious 19th century Jack the Ripper killings in London.

Filming on Ripper Street, commissioned by UK pubcaster BBC1 last August, is now underway in Dublin. The Tiger Aspect/ Lookout Point production stars Matthew Macfadyen (Spooks) and MyAnna Buring (The Twilight Saga).

It was created by Richard Warlow (Mistresses). Greg Brenman and Will Gould from Tiger Aspect and Simon Vaughan from Lookout Point will exec produce. Polly Hills is exec producer for BBC1.

Ripper Street is being made with the participation of Bord Scannán na hÉireann/Irish Film Board. BBC Worldwide has international distribution rights to the series.

Vaughan told C21: “We had an awful lot of interest in Ripper Street in the US. We had serious conversations with four separate broadcasters including a major US network and three cable players. In the end, BBC America felt like the right home for the project.”

Filming, which will continue until late July for broadcast on BBC1 this autumn, is beginning just as the UK government is preparing a consultation on plans to offer tax breaks to drama producers filming in the country.

Ripper Street is one of several UK dramas being shot overseas to take advantage of tax rebates offered internationally, and follows Julian Fellowes’ Titanic, which was shot in Hungary, and Parade’s End, which was principally filmed in Belgium.

Plans for tax breaks for high-end television dramas filmed in the UK, costing more than £1m (US$1.6m) per hour, are due to be announced during the annual budget on Wednesday.
