BBC America sinks teeth into Robin Hood

BBC America is developing a drama series based on the story of Robin Hood from the creator of NBC’s Dracula.

Nottingham, to be written by Cole Haddon, will recast the traditionally villainous sheriff as Robin Hood by night.

According to Deadline, the plot will completely centre on the sheriff, whose wife is killed by King John’s men. However, when nobody is brought to justice, he launches a one-man war against the Crown.

Sony Pictures TV and studio-based Davis Entertainment, the companies behind NBC drama The Blacklist, are producing, with Haddon and Davis Entertainment’s John Davis and John Fox exec producing.

The BBC last brought the mythic hero to the small screen in 2006. Titled Robin Hood, the show was produced by UK indie Tiger Aspect Productions with BBC America as coproducer.

Until now, the Sheriff of Nottingham has always been depicted as a villain, most famously by Alan Rickman in the 1991 Kevin Costner film Prince of Thieves.
