German drama producer Bavaria Fiction hired former A+E Networks Germany programming chief Emanuel Rotstein two years ago to spearhead a move into non-fiction.

The company, a joint venture between Bavaria Film and ZDF Studios, already has a number of projects underway via its Icon Docs arm, including a true crime documentary for Sky Deutschland about the murder of a millionaire in her penthouse flat above a Munich car park, and another about the October 7 Hamas Israeli music festival massacre.

Rotstein spoke with Clive Whittingham about these projects, the health of the German non-fiction sector versus markets elsewhere and how international copros are only growing in importance as public broadcasters everywhere become squeezed.
