The 2024 LA Screenings draw to a close this week, a year on from the start of the writers’ and actors’ strikes that put Hollywood on hiatus for six months – one of the most seismic periods of disruption in the history of the industry.

But with the fall-out from the industrial action and the issues at its core still playing out, it’s still tough times for many in Tinseltown and elsewhere across the business as budget cuts and uncertainty over the impact of artificial intelligence persist.

C21 North American editor Jordan Pinto was in LA this week and spoke to a variety of execs and creatives, including Barbie Kligman, showrunner of new Fox medical drama Doc, coproduced by Sony Pictures Television and Fox Entertainment Studios.

Kligman talked about the show, which is based on an Italian drama of the same name, the renaissance of procedurals as streamers reignite interest in network-style television, and the ongoing struggles of Hollywood scribes.

Adam and Craig Malamut, creators of new Fox adult animated comedy Universal Basic Guys, meanwhile, spoke about how the show – centred on brothers made defunct by technology but given a basic universal wage – taps into a number of themes in the zeitgeist.

The duo, whose series is also coproduced by Sony Pictures Television and Fox Entertainment Studios, reflected too on the impact of AI on animation.
