Banijay falls for DR virtual dating format

European production giant Banijay has optioned Danish virtual reality (VR) dating format Too Shy To Date from Canadian distributor Media Ranch.

Too Shy To Date was created by DR in Denmark

Banijay companies Initial in the UK, Adventure Line Productions in France and SimpelZodiak in the Netherlands have obtained the local rights to the series, while US prodco Figure 8 has also optioned the show.

The series, which was created by and produced by Denmark’s DR, aired on the pubcaster in 2019 for eight episodes. It aims to help people overcome their timid nature by first going on a VR date before meeting in real life.

In related news, Media Ranch has entered into a co-development deal with Korean format producer Something Special for an adventure challenge show.

The deal has already seen Media Ranch broker a deal with Germany’s Tresor TV for Something Special’s lifestyle format Miracle Habits.

Something Special entered into similar deals with the UK’s ITV Studios and US network ViacomCBS this year.
