Babylon Berlin rolls out in Lat Am, Japan

Babylon Berlin began its third run on ARD this month

MIPCOM: German drama Babylon Berlin will soon be on air in more than 140 territories after distributor Beta Film completed new deals with broadcasters in Latin America, Japan and South Korea.

AMC in Latin America, BS 12 in Japan and Channel U in South Korea are the latest networks to pick up this period drama, which debuted its third season on German public broadcaster ARD to more than four million viewers earlier this month.

Based on the novels by Volker Kutscher, Babylon Berlin revolves around police inspector Gereon Rath in 1920s Berlin, a hotbed of drugs and politics, murder and art, emancipation and extremism.

Now totalling more than 40 hours, Babylon Berlin is produced by X Filme Creative Pool in coproduction with ARD Degeto, WDR, Sky and Beta Film. Tom Tykwer (Sense 8), Henk Handloegten (Good Bye Lenin!) and Achim von Borries (Alone in Berlin) write and direct, while the cast is fronted by Volker Bruch (Generation War) and Liv Lisa Fries (NSU German History X).

“Babylon Berlin has established itself as the trademark for high-end series out of Germany,” said Beta Film MD Moritz von Kruedener. “The ongoing international success makes the series a pioneer for German fiction travelling internationally.”
