Baby Reindeer wins drama category at Rose d’Ors as Netflix takes trio of prizes

This year’s Rose d’Or winners assemble on stage

CONTENT LONDON: Netflix’s controversial UK series Baby Reindeer was named best drama at the annual Rose d’Or Awards, which took place here at Kings Place this evening.

The Clerkenwell Films series, created by Richard Gadd and telling the story of his battle with a serial stalker, beat off very strong competition, including from ITV series Mr Bates vs The Post Office, which spurred government action to clear and compensate victims of the UK’s sub-postmaster scandal.

Baby Reindeer’s triumph was one of three wins for Netflix shows. Actor Ambika Mod won the individual Emerging Talent prize for her outstanding performance in the streamer’s David Nicholls adaptation One Day, while Squid Game: The Challenge took the Competition Reality award.

Meanwhile, Gary Oldman won Performance of the Year for his display in Apple TV+ hit Slow Horses, while legendary Italian entertainment star Rosario Fiorello was this year’s Lifetime Achievement winner.

Elsewhere, Belgium continued to punch above its weight, with shows from the country winning in a trio of categories. VRT’s Dertigers 2, from Warner Bros International Television Production Belgium, won the Soap or Telenovela prize; fellow VRT series Niks Te Zien (Nothing to See), from Primitives, took the Factual Entertainment award; and podcast Batavia, from Het Geluidshuis and the Flemish Audiovisual Fund, became the first non-English-language project to win in Audio.

In addition, Norway’s NRK secured something of a coup, taking the Comedy Drama and Sitcom prize for Dates in Real Life ahead of other heavy hitters like Netflix shows Kaos and The Gentlemen, while Channel 4’s Taskmaster won Comedy Entertainment and the BBC’s reboot of Gladiators took Studio Entertainment.

Sophie Duker

“The Rose d’Or Awards are the gold standard of entertainment – you lot must be shitting yourselves,” said comedian Sophie Duker, who hosted the ceremony. “But how do you make great TV shows when there is so much chaos in the business, with 16 generations of iPhones and so many streamers: Disney+, Hulu, Pornhub, Amazon, Netflix, Pornhub…

“And attention spans are in the gutter. Every time I click my fingers, a TV executive is diagnosed with ADHD – by another TV exec with ADHD! They say TV formats are all too samey these days, with no new ideas; it’s all sequels, prequels, reboots – and I know, I’ve pitched some of them. And artificial intelligence is coming to eliminate our jobs. But we’ve been here before with Ask Jeeves, Clippy and the Magic 8 Ball – they’re the OGs of AI!”
