AVoD revenue ‘to hit $66bn by 2026’

Global AVoD forecasts by country (US$m)

Global AVoD revenue will increase by 144% between 2020 and 2026 to reach US$66bn, according to UK analysis firm Digital TV Research.

In its latest report, titled Global AVoD Forecasts, Digital TV Research revealed that AVoD growth dipped to only 9.2% in 2020 but predicted high growth from this year onwards.

Among the 138 countries included in the report, the US will account for US$21bn of the additional US$39bn revenue generated between 2020 and 2026, taking its figure from US$10.1bn to US$31.4bn.

Revenue in China will almost double from US$5.8bn in 2020 to US$10.6bn in 2026, while Japan’s growth will double from US$2.1bn to US$4.3bn.

Revenue in the UK will rise from US$1.8bn to US$3.4bn, while India’s figures will triple from US$715m to US$2.3bn. Other countries combined will see growth more than double from US$6.6bn to US$14.3bn, according to the report.

The US became the largest AVoD country in 2019 as China saw expenditure fall by 9% because of its economic downturn, according to the report. A combination of the coronavirus lockdown and the continued economic downturn led to China’s AVoD dropping by a further 14% in 2020.

China will not better its 2018 total until 2024, although growth will return from 2021, the report predicts.

Simon Murray, principal analyst at Digital TV Research, said: “US AVoD revenue will triple between 2020 and 2026 to US$31bn. Rather than lose market share as other countries catch up, the US will grow its share of the global total from 37% in 2020 to 47% by 2026.”
