Australia’s Nine Entertainment confirms appointment of Matt Stanton as CEO and MD

Australia’s Nine Entertainment has officially appointed Matt Stanton as CEO and MD, having served in an acting role since October.

Stanton’s appointment comes after a comprehensive international search process for a new CEO, following the exit of former Nine chief Mike Sneesby, who stepped down in September after a challenging tenure.

The company was beset by a litany of issues that came to a head in 2024, including management integrity challenges, newsroom toxicity allegations, staff strikes and cost-cutting measures that have resulted in the loss of hundreds of staff.

During his time as acting CEO, Stanton restructured Nine’s operating model, overhauled the executive team and implemented strategic and cultural reform programmes.

Stanton joined Nine as chief strategy officer in 2022 and was chief financial and strategy officer before taking the acting CEO position.

Prior to joining Nine, he served as CEO of dairy product producer Barambah Organics and media firm Baur Media (now known as Are Media), and was also previously chief transformation officer at retailer Woolworths.

Stanton said: “It’s an honour and a privilege to lead the talented and dedicated team at Nine. Nine is a great Australian company that plays a vital role in the national conversation. We have an exciting future, underpinned by the best people and assets in the media sector. We have moved at pace in recent months to strengthen the group, and I’ve been buoyed by the buy-in from people across the company as we progress our ambitious plans to reset and grow the business.”

Nine board chair, Catherine West, said Stanton was the best candidate to continue the media company’s strategic and cultural transformation.

“Matt’s mix of strategic and commercial acumen, transformation and media experience, strong values, and an open and collaborative approach to leadership, make him the right person to lead Nine. After developing the group strategy, Matt has a deep understanding of Nine, our priorities, culture and people and has earned the respect of the senior leadership, the broader workforce, the market and the board,” West said.
