Atresmedia to remake Mother in Spain

Nippon TV’s drama series Mother

Spanish broadcaster Atresmedia has acquired the remake rights to Japanese broadcaster Nippon TV’s drama series Mother.

The series tells the story of an abused schoolgirl who turns to a primary school teacher for help, with both eventually escaping town pretending to be mother and daughter.

Atresmedia will be remaking the series in Castilian Spanish later this year. It marks the eighth international deal for Mother, following licensing agreements with CJ E&M (South Korea), MF Yapim (Turkey), STB TV (Ukraine), JSL Global Media (Thailand), Radiant Pictures (China), GoPlay (Indonesia) and Incognita (France).

The deal was announced by Mikiko Nishiyama, MD of international business development for Nippon TV, and Mercedes Gamero, director of acquisitions and sales of Atresmedia.

“The poignant drama, which revolves around the universal theme of family and what it ultimately means to be a mother, continues to resonate across borders and achieve ratings success,” said Nishiyama.
