Asacha Media Group buys French production company Kabo Family

European production firm Asacha Media Group (AMG) has acquired French scripted production house Kabo Family, which itself comprises 10 production companies and labels.

Christian Baumard

The four founders of Kabo Family – Christian Baumard, Alain Kappauf, Stéphane Moatti and Sophie d’Abancourt – will retain a minority stake in the company, while becoming shareholders in AMG alongside the company’s venture-capital backer Oaktree Capital Management and other producer partners.

AMG said the move makes it “a leading provider of premium scripted content in France and creates valuable synergies with other companies within the group.” These synergies will see Kabo Family tapping into AMG’s network of European producers to develop adaptations and coproductions of its scripted formats, with a particular focus on comedy.

The acquisition is the latest in a string of M&A deals undertaken by 16-month-old AMG. In June, it acquired a majority stake in Death in Paradise producer Red Planet Pictures in the UK, while in February it bought into UK-based Wag Entertainment.

Marina Williams

AMG was formed by the acquisition and merger of Italian production houses Picomedia and Stand By Me and French production company Mintee Studio in April last year.

AMG today said it has achieved consolidated revenues of nearly €200m (US$235m) across its operations in France, the UK and Italy, and is currently pursuing further acquisitions across Europe and the Middle East.

Founded in 2002, Kabo Family comprises 10 production companies and labels, including: Noon, Thalie Images, Kelija Productions, En Voiture Simone, Rosalita Productions, Yada Prod, Vacarme, Kapitch and MKS, a partnership with Marvelous. Since 2012, the group has been acquiring prodcos, backed by Credit Mutuel Equity.

Kabo Family and its various companies are behind shows such as Scènes de Ménages and En Famille for M6, which are  starting their 13th and 10th seasons respectively; Le Mensonge for France 2; Mixte for Amazon Prime Video; and Girl Squad for France Télévision Numerique. In 2020, the group produced 70 hours of scripted programming across multiple genres.

Gaspard de Chavagnac

“We are excited to join forces with Kabo Family and accelerate the growth of Asacha Media Group’s business in France,” said AMG co-founders and joint-CEOs Gaspard de Chavagnac and Marina Williams in a statement. “Christian Baumard and Alain Kappauf have built a formidable team of talent at Kabo, who have created some of the top scripted series on leading French networks and streaming platforms. Bringing them into our group underpins AMG’s position as a major player in France and across Europe.”

Baumard and Kappauf, co-founders of Kabo Family, added: “This partnership provides Kabo Family’s producers with valuable resources for expansion in the international marketplace and underscores the considerable achievements of our creative talent.”

Former Endemol Shine exec Williams and former Zodiak Media Group CEO in France de Chavagnac, together with ex-Zodiak Media CEO Marc-Antoine d’Halluin, formed AMG in April last year.
