Apple TV+’s big-budget, high-end original Severance

Apple is reportedly losing over US$1bn per year on its streaming service, which has an estimated 45 million subscribers.

The eye-catching figure was reported by The Information in a piece about the tech giant’s financials, citing anonymous sources.

According to the report, Apple is spending around US$4.5bn on content for Apple TV+ annually, down from US$5bn in the years following its launch in late 2019.

Apple TV+ is known for spending big on high-end originals such as Severance, The Morning Show and Silo, with the streaming service the sole loss-making part of the tech giant’s wildly profitable portfolio.

The Apple group generated US$391bn in revenue and posted a net profit of US$93.7bn for the fiscal year that ended in September 2024.

The company is notoriously secretive about its financial and subscriber numbers for Apple TV+, but The Information claims it has 45 million subscribers around the world.

Apple TV+ costs US$9.99 per month or $99.99 for a year in the US and does not offer a reduced-price ad-supported option. It is also included in various telco bundles.
