AOL preps long-form original, partners FMI

NATPE: US internet giant AOL is prepping its first long-form original series for its AOL On platform and has partnered with FremantleMedia International (FMI) to distribute the show globally.

Connected (10×30’) is an adaptation of an Israeli factual series and is expected to premiere in the US on AOL On Network in March.

FMI will distribute the show outside the US, with AOL Canada maintaining an exclusive premiere window in that territory.

The series chronicles the lives of seemingly disconnected people in New York, with six apparently separate stories eventually merging into one cohesive storyline. The Israeli version aired in 2009 and the format has since sold across Europe.

Israel’s Koda Communications is working with Morgan Spurlock’s Warrior Poets US prodco to create the AOL version.

In related news, FMI has secured international commissions for its My Mom Cooks Better Than Yours series.

The comedy cooking show takes a mother and her son or daughter into a studio kitchen to compete in a cooking challenge against another mother/offspring duo. The kids must do the cooking while the mums shout instructions from the sideline.

The format has now been picked up by El Trece (Argentina), Prima TV (Romania), TRT (Turkey) Pop TV (Slovenia) and TV Joj (Slovakia). FMI bought the global format rights from Spanish producer Madarina in 2014. The original version aired on Cuatro in Spain.
