Producer and financier Anton has linked with producers Sherry Marsh and Julie Gardner of Bad Wolf America to develop a thriller novel by Chris Bohjalian into a high-end drama series.

The parties have optioned the rights to Bohjalian’s The Red Lotus, which is described as a moving story of love and deceit set against the backdrop of geopolitical power struggles, multinational pharmaceuticals and modern warfare.

When a doctor’s boyfriend goes missing while on holiday in Thailand, she is forced to employ her unique deductive expertise, honed in the adrenaline-fuelled world of the emergency room, in an international manhunt.

Showrunner Kate Brooke (A Discovery of Witches, Bancroft, Mr Selfridge) is attached to the project.

Bohjalian is the author of 20 novels, including The Flight Attendant, which will be released as a series on HBO Max starring The Big Bang Theory’s Kaley Cuoco.

His novels have been translated into 35 languages and have been adapted as movies three times. Bohjalian is also a playwright, having most recently adapted his bestselling novel, Midwives, an Oprah’s Book Club Selection, for the stage.

Anton senior VP of business development Celia Meirow said: “The rich dramatic world of global power-broking, with its host of compelling and morally ambiguous characters, that Chris has created lends itself perfectly to a thrilling international series format.”

Marsh is an executive producer on FX’s Emmy-nominated Pose and is currently producing The Banker’s Wife, a series based on Cristina Alger’s book, for Amazon. Marsh is represented by David Markman at DLA Piper, LLP.

Bohjalian is represented by Brian Lipson of IPG on behalf of Deborah Schneider at Gelfman Schneider/ICM Partners. Brooke is represented by Julia Kreitman at The Agency and Scott Seidel at WME.

Anton was founded by Sébastien Raybaud in 2011 and has co-financed international features such as the Paddington franchise, Non-Stop and Shaun the Sheep.

It currently co-finances an ongoing high-end drama fund with the BBC that has been used for productions such as McMafia, Gentleman Jack and, most recently, Philip Pullman adaptation His Dark Materials.

It also has multi-financing agreements with European studios including Federation Entertainment and TF1-owned Newen, in addition to a self-commissioned shortform drama series with the BBC and Clerkenwell Films, and a gaming drama project with Quibi.

It recently set up Beiboot Representation, a joint venture with former BBC Studios executive Tobi de Graaff, to develop, package and finance high-end television.
