AMC to pull streaming service Acorn TV out of Latin America

Agatha Raisin is among Acorn TV’s original series

Acorn TV, the AMC Networks-owned streaming service specialising in British and international TV, will be pulled from markets including Latin America in early 2024.

The subscription video-on-demand service will no longer be available in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Nicaragua, Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica, Paraguay, Guatemala and Panama as of February 6.

C21 understands certain markets outside of Latin America will also be affected on the same date, but these have yet to be confirmed.

An AMC Networks spokesperson told C21: “We are constantly evaluating the Acorn TV business and are strategically focusing our operations on the global markets that represent approximately 98% of our current customer base.

“This move will unfortunately result in the disruption of service for some customers outside of our major markets. We are working directly with those customers to manage through this transition.”

Acorn TV launched in Lat Am in 2018, marking the first time it had been made available outside of North America, where it was launched in 2011.

As well as the US and Canada in North America, it is also listed as being available to users in American Samoa, Guam, Marshall Islands, Puerto Rico, US Minor Outlying Islands, the US Military and the Virgin Islands.

Specialising in premium British and international television, the service is also currently available in the UK, Scandinavia, the Netherlands, Australia and New Zealand. It pulled out of South Africa in 2022, having launched there in 2018.

Its slate of commissioned and original series includes British crime drama Whitstable Pearl, Queens of Mystery, New Zealand detective series My Life is Murder, Irish crime thriller Bloodlands, Kiwi romantic comedy Under the Vines and British detective drama Dalgliesh.

Current and upcoming Acorn TV original Series include UK detective drama Harry Wild, murder mystery Mrs. Sidhu Investigates, Signora Volpe and The Chelsea Detective. Other titles include Agatha Raisin, Jack Irish, Doc Martin, Deadwater Fell, Midsomer Murders and The Nest.

Acorn TV posted the following message in a section of its website labelled ‘Why is Acorn TV no longer available in my country?’: “We are constantly evaluating the Acorn TV offering and our area of operation and are strategically focusing our operations on the global markets that represent approximately 98% of our current customer base.

“As a result, the service will no longer be available in certain areas as of 2/6/24. We sincerely appreciate your business and apologise for the inconvenience.”
