AMC abandons unscripted

US cablenet AMC is pulling out of unscripted programming to focus on creating more dramas such as Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead.

Production and development of most of AMC’s unscripted shows, including the recently renewed Game of Arms, will be discontinued just three years after the channel entered the unscripted arena.

Only Walking Dead aftershow Talking Dead and Kevin Smith’s Comic Book Men will be continued.

“Scripted originals are at the core of the AMC brand. Iconic shows like Mad Men, Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead have driven AMC’s evolution into a must-have television network,” an AMC spokesman said in a statement.

“We are proud of our efforts in unscripted programming and the unique worlds we have been able to introduce, but in an environment of exploding content options for viewers, we have decided to make scripted programming our priority.”

The move comes less than a year after AMC committed to its push into original unscripted programming by hiring Sundance Channel exec Marco Bresnaz as VP of unscripted.

AMC has a 10-strong unscripted team in New York and Los Angeles and does expect some staff to leave because of the programming shift.

However, the cabler will help producers to find another home for their unscripted projects.
