Amazon Studios looks to expand Bosch universe with two spin-offs in development

Bosch: Legacy is made for Amazon’s Freevee

Amazon Studios is looking to expand its police procedural franchise Bosch, with a pair of spin-off series in the works.

The first title follows Harry Bosch’s former partner, Detective Jerry Edgar, as he is tapped for a high-stakes undercover FBI mission.

Henrik Bastin’s Fabel Entertainment is producing the show. Executive producers include Michael Connelly, who penned the Bosch novels, plus Larry Andries, Bastin and Melissa Aouate.

The second project follows Detective Renee Ballard, who was mentored by Harry Bosch, as she is tasked with running the LAPD’s new cold-case division. Also produced by Fabel Entertainment, the show is exec produced by Connelly, Michael Alaimo, Kendall Sherwood, Bastin and Aouate. Jasmine Russ is co-exec producer on both spin-offs.

Prime Video’s original version of Bosch ran for seven seasons from 2014 to 2021 and helped put Amazon’s streamer on the map as a commissioner of original content. Amazon later commissioned spin-off project Bosch: Legacy, this time for AVoD platform Freevee. That show debuted in May 2022, with season two slated to premiere in the fall.

Amazon has not specified which platform the new spin-offs will launch on if they are eventually greenlit.

Building universes around successful scripted TV shows seems to be a growing trend, with Showtime announcing earlier this week that it is developing as many as four shows connected to its finance drama Billions. It also commissioned a Dexter prequel series and is in development on a sequel, in addition to exploring several series based around other characters from the Dexter franchise.

The expansion of Billions and Dexter comes after Paramount Global spun off its Yellowstone franchise with 1883 and 1923, the latter of which stars Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren. A third series, Bass Reeves, an offshoot of 1883, is also in the works.
