Amazon sets up UK apprentice scheme

Dan Grabiner

Amazon will hire two broadcast production assistants to work within the UK original teams, as part of 1,000 new apprentice opportunities created at the UK arm of the tech giant this year.

The broadcast production assistants will work with Dan Grabiner on unscripted and Johnny Lewsley and Lydia Hampson on scripted.

It is the first time Amazon has hired apprentices within the commissioning and development team. In London, apprentices will be paid a minimum of £10.80 (US$14.79) per hour, while those elsewhere in the UK will earn £9.70, with up to £30,000 a year on offer for degree-level apprenticeships.

Apprentice programmes will last between 14 months and four years. Once qualified, apprentices will have the potential to work across Amazon’s UK sites.

This month, UK producer and distributor ITV Studios also announced a production trainee scheme with the aim of increasing diversity off-screen.

John Boumphrey, UK country manager at Amazon, said: “An Amazon apprenticeship offers an exciting career path, creating opportunities within our local communities across the UK and helping our own employees retrain and gain new skills at a time when investing in people and jobs has never been more important.”
