Amazon gets hands on Maradona biopic

Diego Maradona with the World Cup trophy in 1986

Global streamer Amazon is preparing a biopic on the life of Argentinean football legend Diego Maradona for its Prime subscription service.

The as-yet-untitled original series will follow the triumphs and disasters throughout the controversial life of Maradona, who won 91 caps for his country and won the World Cup in 1986.

Available to Prime Video subscribers in the UK, where he is best known for his controversial ‘hand of God’ goal against England in that 1986 tournament, the show is being produced by Miami-based BTF Media in association with Dhana Media and Raze.

The show is the latest title in Amazon’s sports doc push, following its All or Nothing series of programmes focusing on teams from various sports around the world, including football’s Manchester City, rugby’s All Blacks and rugby league’s Leeds Rhinos.

In related news, Amazon has given a straight-to-series order for a drama led by Jordan Peele about people who hunt Nazis in America.

The Hunt consists of 10 episodes and Peele, who wrote and directed acclaimed film Get Out, will executive produce the show under his Monkeypaw Productions banner.

David Weil created the series and Sonar Entertainment is also producing. The first season will debut in more than 200 countries and territories as a global exclusive for Amazon.
